I just found this amazing piece - is it available for purchase as a print?

May I use this in a project? I'm learning how to do 2.5 D Parallax and this would be a great piece to work with. It would be 100% non commercial, just for my own portfolio, and I will credit you anywhere that I use it.

What Smaug should have looked like in the movie.
JaketheDino Featured By Owner Jan 25, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
He looked fine in the films. Personally, I wouldn't have wanted him any other way.
NineTailedTrickster Featured By Owner Jan 26, 2015
Problem is that he's a Wyvern in the films.

'Course everyone and their mother has mentioned as to why that's a problem when he's supposed to be a Dragon.
Heck, Tolkien himself stated that Smaug had four legs, yet Jackson decided to go with the two-legged Wyvern appearance anyway.
JaketheDino Featured By Owner Jan 27, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Dude, a Wyvern is a Dragon subspecies.  Here is the definition of a Dragon:  A mythical monster generally represented as a huge, winged reptile with crested head and enormous claws and teeth, and often spouting fire.  Smaug and every other dragon in film and literature fits this criteria.
NineTailedTrickster Featured By Owner Jan 27, 2015
I'm not at all trying to start an argument, so I hope you don't view this as such.

The Wyvern in folklore and legend is actually something completely different.
The Wyvern is far more associated with a bird, snake or chicken, rather than a Dragon.
Heck, historical descriptions of Wyverns usually describe them with more bird-like or chicken-like features than reptilian overall.

It had only two thin chicken-like legs, a beak-like snout, feathers rather than horns, a venomous bite, it could spit acid or poisonous fumes from it's mouth, and had a long barbed tail that was also coated in venom. It was also sometimes said that it would hop about, rather than fly.
(Very rarely are Wyverns depicted as being able to breathe fire. So much so that the stories that have them are almost as scarce as stories that talk about griffons.)

Whereas a Dragon has four muscled reptilian legs, a more reptilian snout, horns, (sometimes) spines running along down it's back and tail, it breathes fire and is more prone to flying around instead of hopping.

For example, here is an old Wyvern symbol based off of a coat of arms. I couldn't find the exact coat of arms, though there were similar ones to this; so I'll need to make due with the reproduction:…

And here is an old dragon symbol off of a coat of arms:…

Yes there are some similarities, but it's clear that they are two very different creatures.

Modern media decided to say that Wyverns were a subspecies of dragons, simply because they share one thing; being reptilian monsters with wings.
In mythology and folklore however, this is not the case as they are said in many different stories to be two completely different creatures, despite similarities.

It's sort of like if someone were to say a fox was a subspecies of a wolf simply because they both are canines with sharper features than dogs; simply because both a Wyvern and a Dragon in mythology are winged reptiles, doesn't, and never did, make them the same type of creature.

I have to say that it's rather depressing that so many mythological and folkloric creatures and figures have been changed by modern media and standards.
Though I should probably get used to the fact that nowadays even if people do acknowledge that Wyverns aren't Dragons, the vast majority will still just say that their Dragons, even though many historical sources say otherwise.

The real kicker though, is that most people say that Dragons "HAVE" to have only two legs and "HAVE" to look like Wyverns because "evolution doesn't support Dragons that have four legs and two wings!".
This is a pretty stupid argument, as one, not everyone believes in evolution and it's still called a theory anyway, and two, seeing as it's a creature from a fantasy setting or from mythology and folklore, the "laws" of evolution are instantly nullified by this fact due to the fact that it is either fantasy or mythology that we're talking about.
Fantasy usually taking place in other worlds entirely, and mythology involving numerous gods and monsters that defy basic scientific theories and "facts", as well as the basic laws of nature.

Some might tell me to just get used to it, because that's what things have become now, but I just can't sit there and keep my mouth shut due to knowing that people are getting things wrong.
JaketheDino Featured By Owner Jan 28, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Oh I understand.  It's not that people are getting things wrong, just visionary style.  Who knows, if The Hobbit is ever remade and is closer to the book, Smaug may look like a European Dragon.  The current version of Smaug we have is said to be a blend of different cultures and his name means wyrm.  But I can see where you're coming from and you do provide good evidence to your argument.  Just one question though: DO you feel the same with Vermathrax from "Dragonslayer", the dragons from Game of Thrones and the Harry Potter series?
NineTailedTrickster Featured By Owner Jan 28, 2015
To be honest, I've never seen any of those so I can't really say.
I've only ever watched the first three Harry Potter films, and I could only make it through the first five episodes of Game of Thrones before I couldn't take it anymore.
JaketheDino Featured By Owner Jan 29, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
That's understandable since I've never watched Game of Thrones. Hagrids dragon Norbert was in Sorcerers Stone, the Horntail appeared in Goblet of Fire and the albino dragon appeared in Deathly Hallows part 2. All of them had a Wyvern build but were living breathing dragons.
JaketheDino Featured By Owner Jan 29, 2015  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Well, Norbert, the Hungarian Horntail and the Albino Dragon that helps the trio escape are all four limbed but they fit the criteria of a Dragon.
